Here is a quick instructional video and link to their YouTube channel.
This is one of the best mindfulness resources that I have seen for children that is easy to implement for busy teachers. Cosmic kids has a Youtube Channel with a wide variety of videos that you can use in your room for developing mindfulness, creating a calm atmosphere, teach self regulation all through listening.
You can incorporate this into your daily routine, ideally after play times has been a successful strategy however you can implement when you feel appropriate AND your students will LOVE it!
The most productive strategy when using these types of listening programs is to implement it in a routine (daily, or every second day) so that students experience mindfulness and self regulation when they are not in a state of high/low emotions. Consciously exposing them daily or constantly to this activity will enable their bodies to associate 'calm' and 'relaxation' with the listening activity and music which are in the video.
When an individual can learn how to put their body into a healthy relaxed state through these consistent experiences, they have a greater chance at being able to apply these skills/activities during a high emotional state like anxiety for example, and learn to self regulate in times of stress.
This is referred to by many as 'conditioning' and if a child can learn to do this at an early age, they will be more equipped to handle stress and anxiety as they move through life.
I would have this available (as you all know I love using a 'matrix' which provide options for students to select) on a matrix for a student who would benefit from emotion regulation. I would also run this daily after lunch or a break time, to expose and use as a transition time to set a calm learning environment for the following learning task. Just 5-10 minutes per day will make a HUGE different to your learning environment.
Should you have a student/s who requires it more often, I would have a 'chill out' area set up with a calmness box and head phones for this activity, allowing them a safe place to regulate while the other students continue to work. There is an article on Calmness Box so search for it on www.SavvyTeachers.com.au
What a wonderful skill we can share with students with a simple calm activity for 5-10 minutes each day! I wish I had this opportunity when I was younger!
Please share your own mindfulness and self regulation techniques that you have found for the classroom.
